Program participants must have obtained an appropriate credential applicable for their jurisdiction, field of practice and sufficient practice in a clinical setting with patients or have an advanced degree in their area of study.

Requirements Summary

The minimum requirements for entry into the program include one of the following:

    • Must have successfully completed a Registered Massage Therapy program and/or Spa and Aesthetics program; or
    • Member of a Professional Association which assumes many of the duties of a regulatory body (in the absence of regulated professions in Canadian Provinces); or
    • Must be a registered practitioner in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM)

AND

    • A minimum of 2500 hours of experience working with clients in a clinical setting
      (this occupational experience can be combined from more than one healthcare field).

OR

    • Have an advanced degrees in their area of study.

Detailed Requirements

Registered Massage Therapists (Regulated Provinces)

For registered massage therapist in Canada’s regulated provinces of British Columbia, Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, students require a diploma from a recognized massage therapy training institution and a certificate of registration. Massage therapists must also have at least 2500 hours of experience working with clients in a clinical setting.

Massage Therapists (Unregulated Provinces)

For massage therapists practicing in non-regulated provinces, students must have obtained a diploma from their training institution and verification of membership with their respective Professional Association.   In most cases the Professional Association performs many of the roles typically performed by regulatory bodies, as well as being advocates for members of the profession.  Massage therapists must also have at least 2500 hours of experience working with clients in a clinical setting.

Complementary and Alternative Healthcare Fields

The same criteria apply to other Complementary and Alternative Healthcare fields.  Practitioners must have a diploma from a recognized school.  If the field is regulated, then they must have a certificate of registration with the appropriate regulatory body. 

In the case of belonging to an unregulated field or jurisdiction, the healthcare professional must hold a certification of membership with the applicable Professional Association in that province.

Practitioners must also have at least 2500 hours of experience working with clients in a clinical setting.

WCCMT and CCMH Staff and Faculty

All staff and faculty of WCCMT and CCMH institutions are eligible to register for the West Coast College of Massage Therapy Teacher Training Certificate.  Completion of one courses per year is mandatory in order to maintain employment as an instructor at WCCMT or CCMH institutions.
